The Kansas City Chiefs do enough in the off season to win the AFC West? The Kansas City Chiefs in-depth analysis of the free agents signed and players lost for the 2014 NFL season. Can the Chiefs overcome their players lost in free agency and limited salary cap space to win the AFC West in 2014?
The Kansas City Chiefs finished the 2013 season with an 11-5 record and made the playoffs. They started off amazing winning 9 straight. Everyone thinking that new coach Andy Reid might have a chance to go perfect for the year entering the bye week unbeaten. An amazing thing happens, the Chiefs return from the bye week and drop their next 5 out of 7 and barely make the wild card against the Indianapolis Colts. It gets really unpredictable when in that wild card game, they are winning 38-10 at the half and lose the game in an amazing finish by QB Andrew Luck and the Colts, 45-44. Now that is the definition of an up and down year. Review my article 2014 Kansas City Chiefs NFL Draft Report Card and Player Analysis for an in-depth accounting of the Chiefs draft.
Impact of free agency on the Kansas City Chiefs 2014 season
The Chiefs were restricted making moves because of salary cap issue and had to watch some of their key players sign with other teams. Big losses that will negatively impact the Chiefs are: T Branden Albert, G Jon Asamoah, WR Dexter McCluster, FS Quintin Demps, NT Jerrell Powe and Guard Jeff Schwartz. Only have 5 draft picks didn't help and I think he Chiefs made a huge mistake taking DE Dee Ford with heir first round pick. They needed to draft a WR like Marqise Lee or draft a need position of a player that they lost in the free agency. I am not sure if any of their signings weren't desperate attempts at trying to find low cost diamond in the rough replacements. I do understand they were salary cap restricted but I feel sorry for QB Alex Smith and wonder how long till the no protection and lack of receivers comes to make Kansas City and extremely one dimensional team on the offensive side of the ball. Most teams will start stacking the box and blitzing almost every down playing press coverage and I am expecting lots of sacks and lots of turnovers.

Can The Kansas City Chiefs make it to the playoffs in 2014?
Gonna be a long year and a continuance of what happened in the second half of the 2013 season with long stretches of losing streaks. They lost too much and gained little in either the draft or free agency. I expect the Chiefs to win no more than 7 games and dropped 9 finishing out of the 2014 playoffs and out of the playoff picture. I wonder if Andy Reid is just too burnt to be an effective head coach and may need to step away from the game for a few years or just retire.
