Marvin Lewis was a walk-on player at Purdue University as a linebacker but because of his play was given a full football scholarship to Idaho State University. He graduated Idaho State with a degree in athletic administration and went years later and got his Masters degree in the same.

Marvin Lewis is a member of the Idaho State University Hall of Fame since 2001 and was voted the 2012 Idaho State University Alumni of the Year.

Marvin Lewis spent 10 years in the college ranks coaching at Idaho State University, Long Beach State, University of New Mexico, University of Pittsburgh. He was the linebacker coach at every school.

Marvin Lewis in 2005 led the Cincinnati Bengals to their first division title as well as their first winning season since 1990.

Marvin Lewis first stint in the NFL was with the Pittsburgh Steelers for 4 seasons as their linebacker coach. He was hired in 1996 and spent 6 seasons as the Defensive Coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. At Baltimore, he excelled to the point that the Ravens demolished the Giants at Super Bowl XXXV by the score, 34-7. The game was an amazing defense showcase by Lewis and the Baltimore defense. The Giants had 16 offensive possessions through the game, they scored once, punted the ball 11 times and were intercepted 4 times.

After the 2013 season, Marv lost both his offensive and defensive coordinators when Jay Gruden left to become Washington Redskins head coach and Mike Zimmer left to become the Minnesota Vikings head coach.
