Rex Ryan is the Head Coach for the New York Jets. Here are 10 interesting facts about him.



Rex Ryan who was born on December 13, 1962 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He is the Head Coach for the New York Jets and has been coaching in college and the NFL since 1987.

Facts #1:


Rex Ryan is the son of former Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals, Buddy Ryan. His fraternal twin brother, Rob Ryan, is the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.



Facts #2:


Rex Ryan spent 22 years coaching before landing his first job as an NFL head coach with the New York Jets in 2009.

Rex Ryan played defensive end for Southwestern Oklahoma State University where his fraternal twin brother Rob played opposite him as the other defensive end on the team

Rex Ryan after coaching 7 years at the collegiate level in all aspects, he landed a job with his dad's team, The Arizona Cardinals as a Defensive line and linebacker coach. He stayed there two season before returning back to the collegiate level to take the defensive coordinator job at the University of Cincinnati. After his second season for Cincinnati, he left to spend one year as the defensive coordinator for the University of Oklahoma and Kansas State.

Rex Ryan was hired by Head Coach Brian Billick of the Baltimore Ravens to be their defensive line coach in 1999. In Rex's first season with them, the Ravens defense was ranked 2nd in he NFL and second stopping the run. In his second year, The Ravens improved by setting new NFL records for the fewest points scored and the fewest rushing yards allowed by an opposing team.

Rex Ryan role coaching the defense was evident at the end of the 2000 season when in Super Bowl XXXV, the Ravens held the Giants to a meager 152 yards in total offense, caused 5 turnovers and recorded 4 sacks. Not surprising because the 4 playoff victories leading up to that Super Bowl, the Ravens defense gave up a combined 23 points over 4 playoff games.

Rex Ryan in 2005 was promoted to defensive coordinator for he Baltimore Ravens when Mike Nolan left to become the Head Coach of the San Francisco 49ers. In 2006 because of the success of the Ravens defense, Rex was awarded the Assistant Coach of the Year awards from the Pro Football Writers Association and Pro Football Weekly. After a disgusting 2007 season, the entire coaching staff was dismissed, John Harbaugh was hired as head coach and he kept Rex too be his defensive coordinator. Smart move by Harbaugh because the Ravens in 2008, were the 2nd ranked defense in the NFL getting to the AFC Championship game where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.



Facts #8:


Rex Ryan during his 9 year stint with the Baltimore Ravens led a dominating defense every year as proved by their ranking never being worse than 6th in the NFL. This led to his being hired by the New York Jets to be their Head Coach in 2009 after being previously skipped over by the Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons.



Facts #9:


Rex Ryan led the New York Jets in his first two seasons to consecutive trips to the AFC Championship Game, losing both times to the Indianapolis Colts and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009 and 2010.

Rex Ryan as the head coach of the New York Jets has a 42-38 overall record. He has drafted two franchise QBs, Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. He received an extension to coach thru 2016 to remain head coach but it remains to be seen if he can get past the 2014 season and past the Geno Smith-Mike Vick QB controversy.
