Rex Ryan is the son of former Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals, Buddy Ryan. His fraternal twin brother, Rob Ryan, is the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

Not surprising because the 4 playoff victories leading up to that Super Bowl, the Ravens defense gave up a combined 23 points over 4 playoff games.

In 2006 because of the success of the Ravens defense, Rex was awarded the Assistant Coach of the Year awards from the Pro Football Writers Association and Pro Football Weekly. After a disgusting 2007 season, the entire coaching staff was dismissed, John Harbaugh was hired as head coach and he kept Rex too be his defensive coordinator. Smart move by Harbaugh because the Ravens in 2008, were the 2nd ranked defense in the NFL getting to the AFC Championship game where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
