Josh McCown since being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals has had brief periods where he left the NFL only to find his way back to a roster. In 2010, he found himself in the United Football League and was quarterback for the Hartford Colonials. The following year, in 2011, he was signed by the San Francisco 49ers but was released a month later and became the assistant coach at Marvin Ridge High School. Just under two months later with an injury o Chicago Bear's Jay Cutler, McCown was signed by the Chicago Bears and was officially back in the NFL and in the next few years was released and re-signed by the Bears a few times depending on he health of Jay Cutler.

Josh McCown had to switch his number, from 15 to 12 when the Bears signed WR Brandon Marshall during the period he was temporarily cut thus allowing them to resign his number without drama or cost to Brandon Marshall.
