He graduated with a double degree in physical education and business administration. While working as a graduate assistant with the football team, he earned his Masters degree in athletic administration.

Gus Bradley first coaching job was at North Dakota State as a graduate assistant from 1990 to 1991. He was hied and spent three years at Fort Lewis College as a Defensive Coordinator and a Linebacker Coach.
