Tom Coughlin is the Head Coach for the New York Giants. Here are 10 interesting facts about him.



Tom Coughlin who was born on August 31, 1946 in Waterloo, New York. He was the original head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and is currently the Head Coach for the New York Giants. He has been coaching in the NFL since 1986. He is a 2-time Super Bowl Champion.

Facts#1:


Tom Coughlin went to Waterboro High School in New York. He played football and to this day still holds the single season school touchdown record of 19. Later at Syracuse University, Tom set the school's single season pass reception record.

Tom Coughlin attended Syracuse University and his resident advisor was Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim. He also was teammates with Hall of Fame players: Miami Dolphin's RB Larry Csonka and Denver Broncos RB Floyd Little.

Tom Coughlin's mentor was former Giants Head Coach Bill Parcells. Both are known for their regimentation and discipline, His attention to detail and his sternness led to his being nicknamed, “Colonel Coughlin” by the players.

Tom Coughlin first 15 seasons coaching was in he college ranks. He started coaching at Syracuse University as a graduate assistant. From there, he was hired to be the head coach of the Rochester Institute of Technology. He left to return to Syracuse starting as QB coach and then to offensive coordinator. Leaving Syracuse, he found a position as the QB coach at Boston College where he coached future NFL QB Doug Flutie.

Tom Coughlin made the leap into coaching at the professional level in 1986 as a wide receiver coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants.

Tom Coughlin and Bill Parcells share some funny coincidences in their coaching careers. They were together for the 1990 season when the Giants won Super Bowl XXV. They both have made the playoffs five times being head coach of the Giants. Tom Coughlin in 1995 was hired by brand new franchise the Jacksonville Jaguars. In their second year in the NFL, Coughlin led them to AFC Championship game in 1996. In the 8 years he was in Jacksonville, he brought them to two AFC Championship games, losing both. One loss to the New England Patriots and the other loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Tom Coughlin in 1996 was named the NFL Coach of the Year by United Press International.

Tom Coughlin is active in charities, namely the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation. Om founded the charity in 1996 while coaching the Jacksonville Jaguars and it's focus is to to help families tackle childhood cancer by providing comprehensive financial, emotional and practical support.”

Tom Coughlin is the oldest of 7 children. He and his wife, Judy have 2 sons and two daughters and 11 grand-children. Tom lives in Park Ridge, New Jersey since coming to coach the Giants. One of om Coughlin's daughters is married to New York Giants Guard Chris Snee.
