Preview Trailer for "Edge of Tomorrow" Opening June 6, 2014

Is "Edge of Tomorrow" a Mashup of "Independence Day" Meets "Groundhog Day"?

"Edge of Tomorrow" is the new Tom Cruise action movie, this time a sci-fi thriller. Is that news? Not really but the premise of the movie is E.T. Meets Groundhog day. "Edge of Tomorrow" finds Tom Cruise battling aliens that have attacked Earth, but there is a twist. Here is the "Edge of Tomorrow" Trailer.

The Twist

Tom Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage who is tasked to slay the aliens that have attacked Earth. They are a brutal bunch of hive swarming, speedy little buggers, called the Mimics, that soon wipe out many cities leaving nothing behind them but rumble. Only one problem with the movie. Tom cruise is killed at the very beginning of the movie at the end of a battle. Shockingly, that would be the end of the movie but Hollywood has done it again with their twist. This time, Tom Cruise transcends time space and because of his proximity dying next to one of these aliens he has successfully killed, he is dragged into a wormhole and transported back in time to the same battle. This enables him to fight the same battle where he met his demise and experience his same death. But it also allows him the ability to learn from his mistakes and get better with every rematch. Albert Einstein would have something interesting to say about this premise.

Sci-fi Groundhog day movie mash-up

Ok, if everyone is thinking about the Bill Murray movie, "Groundhog day," I can't blame you there. I did as well but there are aliens in this movie and I like Aliens. Like Bill Murray, The "Edge of Tomorrow" and Tom Cruise have it's female protagonist, female hero and his love interest played by Emily Blunt rather than beautiful Andie MacDowell. Blunt's character is Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski, a legend that has killed more Mimics than anyone on Earth. Her task is to help Tom Cruise learn about the aliens weaknesses and help him train to defeat them. Now, "Edge of Tomorrow" has evolved to be a movie mash-up combining the premises of "Independence Day meets Groundhog Day meets The Last Samurai."

"Edge of Tomorrow" Movie Trailer

The movie trailer for "Edge of Tomorrow" was released on May 11th and it is stunning. A bit confusing as to the story line but it is action packed with a ton of CGI effects and showcases Tom Cruise kicking some serious alien butt. The movie opens nationally on June 6th, and Hollywood hopes it is the blockbuster of the early summer movie schedule. Like "Edge of Tomorrow," maybe we will learn more about it if we watch the movie trailer multiple times, who knows?
