How Did the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Do in the 2014 NFL Draft?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a rough time with coach Greg Schiano. They were also bitten by the injury bug to their running backs. Doug Martin and Mike James. They also had a staph infection that caused three players to become infected: Kicker Lawrence Tynes, Guard Carl Nicks who had to undergo surgery and Cornerback Johnathan Banks who wasn't put on the PUP list. This is some serious life threatening stuff.
Schiano gets fired
Coach Schiano draconian methods did nothing to him endear him to his team or the fans and was summarily fired after the season to terrorize some underclassmen at his next College coaching football gig. Missed his calling to be a cop or a Marine Corps Drill Instructor, what a shame.
Silver lining to every "Rainey" day
Little RB Bobby Rainey made some noise after he really had some huge games when Mike James and Doug Martin were lost to season ending injuries. Nevertheless, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished with a 4-12 record but there was a silver lining to the season, they had a chance to get QB Mike Glennon a whole season under his belt.
HC Lovie Smith makes some moves in the off-season
New Head Coach Lovie Smith made some immediate moves, he signed Chicago free agent QB Josh McCown to be his starting QB and released CB Darrelle Revis. He also Released OT Donald Penn, Released G Davin Joseph, and traded OL Jeremy Zuttah to Baltimore for an undisclosed 2015 draft pick. The Tampa Bay Bucs Signed S Major Wright and WR Lavelle Hawkins and QB Mike Kafka.
Tampa Bay Bucs needs for the 2014 season
Tampa is looking good with a good mix of talent on both sides of the ball, but will have to make a conscience effort to concentrate on theses three positions: WR, OT, OG, CB.
2014 NFL DRAFT PICK RECAP AND ANALYSIS
Mike Evans WR, Texas A&M Round 1 Pick #7
As I predicted in my 2014 NFL Mock Draft , the Tampa Bay Bucs draft an immediate impact player that will give them two big body receivers with great catching ability. Great Pick.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE, Washington Round 2 Pick #6
6'5" 265 Tight End that plays the game as good as anyone. He is the next Rob Gronkowski without the injuries and prima donna complex. With Bucs are already stacked at TE with Brandon Myers and Tim Wright. Tim Wright plays more like a catching full back than TE so I expect Seferian-Jenkins to become the starting TE from the first game forward. Immediate red zone threat, this guy is the icing on the cake on an already really potent offense. Great Pick.
Charles Sims RB, West Virginia Round 3 Pick #5
Puzzling draft pick at first look but if you think about the way McCown plays, he is a check down artist as evidenced by hos almost non existent amount of interceptions thrown. Charles Sims likes to float out to the flat and his is the exact design that could drive defenses insane. Imagine they have Vjax and Evans split wide, they have Seferian-Jenkins in the seam with Charles Sims or Bobby Rainey in the slot and then have Doug Martin in the backfield with Mike James or Tim Wright. What can the defense do to stop this cause Josh McCown could audible anything here. The amount of offensive combinations are endless. Tampa Bay is gonna be one exciting team to watch and a puzzle to beat. Great Pick.
Kadeem Edwards OG,Tennessee State Round 5 Pick #3
A bit of a project player that is hard to envision him starting at Right Guard. Needs an NFL conditioning program and lots of work on his technique. Not unusual for a 5th rounder. Tampa still has a huge hole on the right side interior but I bet they trade some of their offensive talent to another team to fill this position. Edwards is two years away from seriously starting and being an impact player. Great Pick.
Kevin Pamphile OT,Purdue Round 5 Pick #9
Another move to strength the offensive line two years from now. Both of these last two picks have future written all over them. If McCown is a short term solution and Mike Glennon is the QB of the future, they are both pocket passers and need good protection. You can see the future Lovie Smith has in mind with these draft picks. Great Pick.
Robert Herron WR, Wyoming Round 6 Pick #9
Just another receiver to stick in the slot. No problem here, if he makes a catch a game in every game, he just paid for himself twice over. Great pick and it's amazing to watch a GM and a coach operate with a plan. They prove that you don't need 12 picks to have a great draft. Great Pick.
Overall Team Draft Day Analysis
With the return of Doug Martin and Mike Lames at RB, and the emergence of Bobby Rainey who will play like Darren Sproles did in New Orleans, the ground game will be tough to stop. Now, couple, this with a veteran QB who doesn't make many mistakes and two big bodied wide receivers in Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans they have multifaceted balanced attack. Now with the addition of Austin Seferian-Jenkins at Tight End and the existing Tight ends Tim Wright and Brandon Myers. This is one team that will be a powerhouse on offense. New day for the Bucs and it isn't about their prideful defense any more. Do yourself a favor and give the points and take the Bucs all year. You will make money.
Draft Grade: A++
Not a bad pick in the entire draft. I thought Houston Texans and the Carolina Panthers had huge days drafting, this was a masterpiece. Wow!!
