How Did the Washington Redskins Do in the 2014 NFL Draft?
The Washington Redskins need some positions filled in the 2014 NFL Draft at Safety, OLB, and LB. Huge free agent pickup from the Dallas Cowboys getting DT Jason Hatcher as well as signing free agent WR DeSean Jackson who was unfairly released by the Philadelphia Eagles. RGIII needs to be more consistent this year but the addition of DeSean Jackson makes the Redskins a multifaceted offense. The Washington Redskins can beat anyone at anytime now. They have it all on offense, they just need to get disciplined and seriously concentrate on their defense. The Washington Redskins don't have a round 1 draft pick this year, The Rams have it as payment for allowing the Redskins to trade up to get RGIII two years again in the 2012 Draft. That debt is now paid and the Redskins have him free and clear.
New Coach Jay Gruden will bring a freshness to the Washington Redskins
Jay Gruden is the new head coach so I do expect the Redskins to truly reform and become extremely potent considering Jay can call on John Gruden every minute of every day. That is a huge benefit. A lot of people aren't aware but Jay Gruden was a QB in the Arena Football league and is in the Hall of Fame of the league as well, leading the Tampa Bay Storm to 4 Championships, he also as a coach in the Arena football league coached the Orlando Predators to two Championships. Gruden has an urgency to prove that he would have been a starter at QB in the NFL if someone had given him a chance and because of that he has a huge chip on his shoulder and wants to win. His first move of the draft was to trade out of the 34th pick and pick up an extra 3rd rounder which was a sharp move since linebacker Marcus Smith was already drafted and was the player at the top of their board.

Trent Murphy OLB, Stanford Round 2 Pick 15
Washington trades down and gets a very good outside linebacker in Trent Murphy. Reminds me of a bigger body Luke Kuechly type of linebacker that because of his size and speed could easily stunt blitz at anytime from any part of the field. This guy is the real deal and will instantly upgrade their defense.
Morgan Moses OT, Virginia Round 3 Pick 2
Need to protect the RGIII and the Washington Redskins get a steal in the third round. I had Morgan Moses projected to go in the 1st round to the Carolina Panthers in my 2014 NFL Mock Draft. With small adjustments to his technique and an NFL conditioning program, the Washington Redskins upgrade the left side of their line immediately. Great damn pick.
Spencer Long OG, Nebraska Round 3 Pick 14
Can play Guard or Center and his versatility is a huge advantage for the Washington Redskins. Coming off an ACL tear and not looking like he will ever play in 2014, he is more of a project for the 2015 season. Not sure if they could have gotten him in a later round but good interior anchors are hard to find specially ones who can snap the ball. Will get a whole year of coaching and watching film so I think it is a good pick.
Bashaud Breeland CB, Clemson Round 4 Pick 2
Tough football player that plays bigger than his size. Loves to hit people but he needs some work on his quickness and he may eventually be transitioned to a safety position or made to work exclusively in the nickel. He will make an immediate impact on special teams so a good 4th round pick.
Ryan Grant WR, Tulane Round 5 Pick 2
Might have reached here with this guy. More of a project player that I had projected in the 6th round. Has good speed, size and great hands so the Redskins see something I missed. Fast twitch muscles enable him to make those quick stabbing catches that a lot of receivers can't make. With the Redskins taking him early tells me I missed something when projecting him.
Lache Seastrunk RB, Baylor Round 6 Pick 10
This guy is really fast. Only 5'9" but has 200lb frame and can easily turn on the Jets and leave any linebacker in the dust. Has good hands and will be dangerous in the flat especially when RGII runs the option. Really like the plays that can be called with Seastrunk and Morris on the field at the same time. Really nice pick with a 6th rounder.
Ted Bolser TE, Indiana Round 7 Pick 2
Big day at Indiana's Pro-day. 6'5" 250 pound with excellent speed and quick cuts getting separation from a defender. Has the ability to play as a TE or a big slot receiver that can move the chains. Lots of ways to utilize a player like this and another weapon to spread the field.
Zach Hocker K, Arkansas Round 7 Pick 13
My ears always perk up when a team drafts a kicker. Washington has Kai Forbath who only missed 5 kicks out of 40 so it is odd they would use this pick on Zach Hocker and not "fish" for another Safety or inside linebacker, I'm wondering if Hocker will be a kickoff man and not for Field Goals.
Analysis and overall draft grade
I really like the day the Washington Redskins and Jay Gruden had in his rookie NFL draft as a head coach. They had to work around no first round pick and had the courage to trade down in the second round. That to me is courage and confidence in their scouting department that they had a plan and stuck to it.
Draft Grade: A-
Big grade but the draft was impressive for the players they got and how they found them. Love where the Redskins are headed this year. I think they may be playoff bound. About time.
