Croque Madame, the East Coaster, The Bobbie and The Diablo for Me Are the Ultimate Sandwich in Las Vegas
Sandwiches. We eat them for breakfast, lunch, dinner or that quick, late night snack. Anything between two slices of bread is a sandwich. The loosest definition in the world and we can thank a gambler for it. Because of the sandwich inventor being a gambler, I thought it suitable to write about my 4 favorite sandwiches in Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world.
Origins of the Sandwich
John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich in England is acknowledged by most food historians as the creator of the sandwich. Folk lore brings us the tale of a gambler who didn't like to leave his place at the table. One evening in 1762, Montagu was gambling for an extended length of time and was hungry. He told his cook to make him something to eat that wouldn't interfere with his ability to play and tasted good. The cook returned a short time later with meat between two slices of toast. The sandwich was born. Montagu was able to play with one hand and eat with the other and the sandwich was soon a very popular meal in England. A few years later, The American revolution started and British soldiers soon found their way to the shores of America. Some Redcoats were captured by the colonialists and soon their eating habit of taking their protein and sliding it between two pieces of bread took notice. Colonialists used ham not meat as that was the more available protein in the new world. Today, the most popular sandwich is the Peanut Butter and Jelly (PB&J).

Fancy name for a ham and cheese sandwich invented in Paris at the turn of the 20th century, but this one is amazing. Two slices of perfectly even Brioche bread layered with Swiss and Gruyere cheese and smoked ham and then smothered in a decadent bechamel sauce and crowned with a fried sunny side up egg.
The East Coaster at The D Grill at The D Casino and Hotel on Fremont street in Downtown Las Vegas
The D Grill just got a total floor to ceiling renovation after Fitzgeralds was sold and the casino was reinvented The D. This amazing sandwich is a tribute to the East Coast and is one of my favorites cause it reminds of my days living and working in New York City. It is two slices of New York Rye bread piled high with Corned Beef, covered with melted Swiss cheese topped with coleslaw and drowned in Russian Dressing with the most amazing french fries for a budget saving price of $10.99. When you do stop in ask, for Vladimir the coolest waiter in Las Vegas and duplicate of Yul Brynner. Sounds Russian but he is Costa Rican, go figure. He raves about the 12oz. Prime Rib dinner for $11.99, I haven't tried it yet but I don't doubt him for a second.
The Bobbie at Capriotti's Sandwich Shop--26 locations in Las Vegas
This is Thanksgiving Leftovers fresh any time you crave it. A hoagie roll stuffed with freshly roasted shredded turkey, homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayonnaise. Not sure why they call it the Bobbie but it is amazing. A 9 inch sub costs $7.00 and 20 inch is $12.00 which easily can feed three people. Split it with two friends and it's a great $4.00 lunch.
The Diablo Lobster Roll at Lobster Me in Planet Hollywood Miracle Mile Shops in Las Vegas
Fresh cooked lobster on a buttered roll covered with spicy marinara sauce and available at two "heat" levels. I prefer the extra hot as it leaves the right amount of sting while still letting the lobster flavor come thru. A few spritzes of lemon juice bring this wonderful hoagie to a crescendo of mouth watering savor. Who would have known that Lobster was available at the Food Court of a casino. They also have Batter dipped fried Lobster tail on a popsicle stick. Give it a try and don't pass up the Lobster Mac and Cheese. The Diablo is $20 but it has a nice amount of lobster and in my roll, there were 3 intact claws. Yummo! It's Vegas baby, so you might as well indulge. Next door is a Fat Tuesday's to wash it down with a Fresh Lime Sour or a Spiked Lemonade. Bon Appetit.
