Fake Saints Hurt the Catholic Church

Does Waiving Some Requirements for Sainthood Undermine the Credibility of the Catholic Church?

The Roman Catholic church has redefined the meaning of being a saint. The first time two Popes will be canonized at the same time in the 2,000 year church history will be John XXIII and John Paul II. The "Canonization of Saints" process has always been held to a high standard, sometimes taking centuries before canonization. Pope Francis exercised " equipollent canonization", the process of fast tracking prospective candidates by not requiring all of the criteria and glossed over the most important factor in determining Sainthood, the miracle.

Proofs of a Miracle
The Vatican props up a 1966 "suspect miracle" of a nun being miraculously healed after praying for her cure in the name of the Pope John XXIII. In John Paul II's case, a Costa Rican mother of four diagnosed with an inoperable brain aneurysm prayed to a picture of the Pope on a magazine and was cured. Listen, I want to believe but this is nonsense and all it does is muddy the waters for the next case of a miracle. Does much more harm than good. Doing this, Pope Francis lowered the bar and effectively created the Hall of Fame of the Catholic Church. No longer will miracles be part of the criteria for Sainthood. It will be about popularity. It seems to be the new rule is to start canonization of any Pope regardless of any standard.

Pope John Paul II was a popular saint because of his mass appeal as a "father figure" to the world's Catholics. His attempted assassination and decline in health during his papacy only furthered heightened his popularity. But the reality is he ruled during the time of some of the worst hypocrisy in the church, namely the hiding of priests who were child pedophiles and concealing their acts. A nice man but hardly a Saint.

Waive Miracle requirement
Father Lindeijer, an advocate for prospective Saints and a senior Catholic church official compared the absence of miracles to allowing " everyone to be a major league baseball player." Maybe not the best analogy, but I get what he is saying. " Miracles are a great protection of justice, a sign of approval from God," Lindeijer said. In other words, being Pope is just not good enough criteria for Sainthood. Yes, A Pope is a special person but Saints are one step above.

Beatified or Canonized?
Pope Francis could have easily let these two Popes be beatified and not canonized. A small difference but enough where most would consider the two Popes to be "Blessed" rather than "Sainted". Personally, I would be an advocate of this alternative. Kinda the same way I felt about Mother Theresa. I always felt she was a Beloved person, not a Saint. Beloved Mother Theresa has not been canonized because of a lack of miracles. Exactly as it should be.

One million people are reported to be flocking to Rome to attend the Canonization ceremonies for the two inductees. That's a tremendous boost for a declining fan base for the Vatican and the Church in general. Souvenir stands will be busy, more Pope refrigerator magnets will be sold, and more donations to the Church will follow.

Popularity Contest?
If this is to be a popularity contest without criteria, then make it so. But don't hold out double standards of admission as it undermines the credibility of the process and the candidate. Should the church succumb to the "fast food" serving up of Saints or should the long process of vetting thru investigation and review be the proper path for determination of sanctity.

Being educated by the Marianist brothers and a lifelong Catholic, I believe in the sanctity of Saints. I was taught that a Saint held a more direct path to God and that praying to a Saint was better since they had the "ear of God" and could directly intercede on one's behalf. I opine that the highest standard benefits the Church, it's members and future candidates for Canonization. Fast tracking self serves the existing church bureaucracy and undermines future prospects and their deeds.

Home Burglary Prevention Tips

Easy, Cost Effective Ways to Prevent a Home Break-in

Last year, the FBI reported, a home burglary occurred every 15 seconds. That shocking number totals 2 million plus home burglaries per year. Summer is the most active time for thieves because of mild weather and vacationing homeowners. Simple ways to stop a home burglary are attention and prevention. There is little chance stopping the professional. These steps will deter and stop the amateur which according to the FBI is the biggest perpetrator of this crime.

FBI Crime Data on Home Burglary

Data supplied by the FBI shows that 60% of the break-ins involved forcible entry and 30% were entries without force. $4.6 Billion in goods were stolen from homes and businesses but residential burglary accounted for 70% of the crimes. Theft losses averaged $2100 plus the replacement cost for the damage from the break in. Most items stolen are “easy to carry and sell” things such as: Laptops guns, jewelry, cash, cameras, electronics, tools, furs, etc.

ATTENTION

First step in home burglary prevention. Take a look at your home, both day and at nighttime, as well as a walk around and honestly assess the security of your home. Ask Yourself.

  • Is it well lit?

  • Are there open windows?

  • Does the landscaping allow the burglar places to break in unnoticed?

  • Do you have motion detectors with outside lighting?

  • Does your home look occupied or deserted?

PREVENTION

Home Security System

There is a 300% increase that your home will be burglarized if it doesn’t have a Home Security System.

85% of break ins are done by non-professionals and these are also the most dangerous if a homeowner discovers them before they are finished. Most are crimes of opportunity as evidenced by FBI statistic showing 30% were unforced entry thru an unlocked window or door. 60% of the forced entries were done by thieves with basic tools such as a screwdriver, hammer, and pry bars. No sophisticated equipment needed. An inexpensive home security system protecting vulnerable entry points such as sliding glass doors, first floor windows and the obvious front door will help deter the unprofessional thieves. Companies such as ADT offer free installation of the hardware with a contract for the protection service agreement at an affordable monthly rate. If the budget is tight, a DIY system like REACTOR HOME SECURITY SYSTEM, priced at a very reasonable $249.95 with no recurring monthly fees, is perfect peace in mind for family security.

Low Cost Security Upgrades

  • Security Locks featuring a heavy duty 1 inch deadbolt into a heavy duty strike plate installed using 3 inch screws into the frame.

  • Solid Core and Metal Doors.

  • Wooden dowel or rod in the door track of sliding doors and windows

  • Family Dog—all sizes are good, their bark will alert you of entry while sleeping. A mid-sized dog can be a huge deterrent, post a “Beware Guard Dog” sign in a visible place, even if you don't own a dog.

  • Home Guarded by Alarm System lawn sign and window stickers are usually enough to keep away the amateur thieves even if you haven't invested in a system. Perception sometimes is enough for them to look for a softer target.

Vacation Time

Every year we leave our homes for that much needed vacation. Make sure you don't return to find an unexpected surprise. Some quick tips to prevent a home burglary while you are away on vacation or a weekend trip.

  • Leave a vehicle in the Driveway or have your neighbor park their car in your driveway.

  • Use timers to turn on lights, TV, radios.

  • Put a temporary hold on mail and newspaper deliveries.

  • Ask your neighbor to collect any circulars left on your property.

  • Make sure all windows and doors are properly secured.

  • Let a trusted neighbor know you will be away and have them report any suspicious behavior.

  • Don't broadcast on social media sites that you are going to Mexico for a family vacation the first week of March..that falls into the Too Much Information(TMI) category.

  • If you have a security system, make sure you give a trusted neighbor the key and the code.

  • Alert the police that you will be away and they may patrol your block and look more closely at your property.

  • To prevent fire, Unplug appliance plugs from the wall, You also save money.

Nothing beats common sense. The home burglar is usually a desperate person with dependency issues. They are not skilled and want an easy entrance/exit and escape. Your job is to make your home secure enough to deter that type of burglar. Forget stopping the professionals without sophisticated systems. It's just not happening and that's why you need homeowner's insurance in case of loss. Remember to lock doors and windows and you will stop all but the most determined home burglars.

Los Angeles Clippers Owner, Donald Sterling's, Penalty for Being a Racist?

Lots of questions popped into my head yesterday after listening to Donald Sterling, owner of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers basketball team taped conversation that was "leaked" to TMZ Sports that by now has been heard by more people than President Obama's last State of the Union speech.

What is the penalty for racist remarks? Should people who say racist things go to prison? Should they be fined per word, per thought, or per incident? Should punishment escalate according to amount of offenses? Is it a misdemeanor or a felony? Would the three strike rule apply to be considered a habitual offender and demand life in prison without parole? Should they have to attend racism classes for "rebooting,"? Is there a statute of limitations such as in Paula Deen's case? Should it be legislated by state or federal government? Is it Constitutional to legislate against racist beliefs? It's going to require the wisdom of Solomon and Abraham Lincoln to negotiate this issue.

THE LAW regarding taped Conversations

Some other ethical questions to answer concerning the Donald Sterling remarks. His trophy girlfriend, Ms. V. Stiviano, recorded this conversation without his knowledge. California, being a two party privy state, recording private conversations are illegal without both parties consent as per California Penal code section 630-638 . It is criminally punishable, the penalty imposed could be a $2500 fine and 1 year in jail. Also expect a civil lawsuit as the party recording the conversation can be held liable for any losses occurred by the other party. Would a judge have to strike from the record evidence obtained illegally? Is it ethical for news media to use illegally wiretapped conversations? Could TMZ be liable to Donald Sterling for damages for publishing an inadmissible tape and thus be guilty of libel for circulating something that can't be substantiated cause the fruit of the evidence is tainted. Suppose the tape was altered? All of this adds up to some interesting speculation and thought as a society how we should address such behavior on this matter and others like it in the future.

The Defense?

First let me say, I think what Donald Sterling said was absolutely obscene and without defense. There is no excuse for it and shows his true colors(no pun intended). I'm sure his PR people will try to spin it or make an excuse. They could whip out the Ambien defense like Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Kerry Kennedy (quick side note: I was always amused they both got away with DUI using the same defense, awesome). They could have Donald Sterling admit to being a longtime sufferer of Tourette's syndrome or Alzheimer's disease. I'd have to use a Dr. Phil-ism for those excuses, "I'm sorry, but those dogs just won't hunt."

The Solution?

OK, let's agree that there are no excuses for this behavior. Let's also agree that he said everything on the tape with a sound mind, no drugs or alcohol involved and not a legitimate excuse in the world. So, Now what? Can the NBA commissioner Adam Silver force him to sell the team? The Los Angeles Clippers are worth $575 Million according to Forbes magazine article in January 2014. Will he get paid what it's worth and won't any qualified prospective buyer know the value of the team and the reason why he needs to sell and try to take advantage of the situation and make a profit on racism indirectly. Pandora's Box on steroids when you start peeling the layers away from this smelly onion. Can players boycott their games effecting a breach of contract and not be held financially responsible for that breach cause their feelings were hurt? Should we listen to the unreasonable demands of Rev. Al Sharpton to make Donald Sterling give the team back to the NBA and forfeit almost $600 million dollars in equity and future income. Is this an equitable punishment for his "crime"?

Should Mr. Sterling be fined by the NBA for conduct unbecoming and actions detrimental to the league. Bingo, we have a winner. In this case, that is exactly what will be done. Sterling has owned the team since 1981, the NBA is a cronyistic organization and the NBA commissioner is appointed by the owners and serves at their discretion, Commissioner Silver will do as told. That's the reality. A fine imposed, Mr. Sterling will be publicly shamed, the feature focus of many articles and the target of many media talking heads like Rev. Sharpton and his National Action Network, ESPN2 Keith Olbermann and the rest of the bandwagon jumpers. They will rally around an emotional issue and use that to further their own agenda and themselves "profit" indirectly from racism.

You Can't Fix Stupid

Comedian Ron White coined this expression in his comedy routine. It's the most accurate and only thing that can be said in Donald Sterling's defense. We, as a free society, have to respect the right to thought, right or wrong. We have to respect the sanctity of private conversation.

Voltaire, a French philosopher, has been attributed with the saying, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Is there a lesson to be learned from such a quote? Can this be the answer? Is the answer, tolerance of the feeble minded?

Ben Franklin said "If everyone is thinking alike, then no one is thinking." Words to ponder because he was a staunch advocate of Freedom of Thought.

John F. Kennedy said in Saturday Review, October 29, 1960, "Let us welcome controversial books and controversial authors. For the Bill of Rights is the guardian of our security as well as our liberty." No clearer words spoken by our beloved ex-president that would argue tolerance of the wickedly stupid.

Slippery Slope

You can't make someone like anyone. You can't force bigots to like their own prejudices. It only binds the hatred tighter. You can't force people to associate with each other. The Beatles sung, "All you need is Love" but we also need tolerance of the stupid. Tolerance of the people that hate others. Let us ignore "the haters" and concentrate teaching the new generation to choose acceptance and appreciate what makes us different physically and culturally. You can't criminalize ideas. You can't legislate thoughts. The Constitution directly forbids the making of law by Congress abridging the Freedom of Speech. Yes, Hate words are unprotected speech but hate is protected. We are allowed to hate, it is our right. And there is a measure in place to penalize the haters if that hatred escalates to discrimination. It takes true enlightenment to understand the right course of action when dealing with hatred and a great place for guidance is in the Good Book.

Matthew 5-44: " But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you ."

Four Cheap Brunch Deals Off the Las Vegas Strip

Four Cheap Brunch Deals Off the Las Vegas Strip that will save you money.  Living four miles east of The Strip is a great life. Close enough to the action but far enough away. Lots of places to find great meals at cheap prices with excellent value. No need to stay on the Strip and overpay for a mediocre meal.

Boulder Highway

A major six lane thoroughfare that traverses the East Side of Las Vegas and is the main corridor connecting Henderson to Downtown, the popular Fremont Street District. Locals call it The Boulder Strip because of the casinos, renown for their food specials and other amenities like multiplex movie theaters and bowling alleys. All offer expansive parking areas, 24 hour operation, ease of access to city buses and security.

Eastside Cannery--Boulder Hwy. And Harmon Ave.

Opened in 2008, The Cannery is a modern, open air design. My favorite destination on the weekends because of their $9.99 price for card holders. and the two for one coupon in Friday's local newspaper. The Cannery Row Buffet is a true Las Vegas smorgasbord with Carving stations. My favorite is the cook to order omelet station, the cinnamon toast, and corned beef hash. Don't miss the Biscuits and Gravy.

Sam's Town Gambling Hall--Boulder Hwy. And Flamingo Rd.

Besides the food court, and the sports book deli, Sam's Town has a buffet, the Firelight Buffet. My favorite destination because of the $5.99 card holders special. Breakfast hours are 7-10 AM but I normally arrive towards the end, thus able to enjoy the overlap of foods offered for both the breakfast and lunch service I really love the “make your own” taco station, I can easily eat a half dozen of those bad boys.

Arizona Charlies Casino--Corner of Boulder Hwy. And East Twain Ave.

The Wild West Buffet is my yearly destination for Easter Brunch. Honey Glazed Spiral Ham, Eggs Benedict, and Roasted Leg of Lamb with Champagne for $8.99. The most amazing deal in Las Vegas.

Boulder Station Casino--Boulder Hwy. And East Desert Inn Rd.

The Feast Buffet is $9.99 with cooking stations offering Chinese, Italian, American, BBQ, Mexican entrees made to order. Besides the Salad and Dessert Bars that are a standard, my favorite are the Fajita and the BBQ stations. Slow cooked pulled pork and baby back ribs are to die for.

So next time in Las Vegas. Stop the insanity and the Strip Casino's $30 breakfast menus. Come a few miles east and experience Las Vegas as a local and save lots of money.

5 NASA Inventions Taken for Granted

We are surrounded by objects from space. I don't mean moon rock or stuff along those lines. I am referring to the inventions that came about because of the Space program, particularly from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). For every 1,000 patents granted, one of them can be traced back to a NASA project. Without the inventions by NASA, we would not have satellites and that would mean, no GPS for phones or long range communications including most TV transmissions. Satellites have had the biggest impact without a doubt but we will concentrate this article on some of the other NASA products that we take for granted.

Water filter

NASA had to find a way to hydrate the astronauts and the water filter was born. Today, the Brita water filter in the refrigerator is a direct byproduct of NASA and the invention of the Microbial Check valve that used iodine to filter contaminants from water to provide for clean drinking water in space. This technology is also used by local municipalities for their water plants. NASA has even figured out how to filter urine so astronauts are able to use that source as well. Amazing!

Scratch resistant Eyeglass lenses

At the same time NASA was inventing the water filter, it was experimenting with a way to coat the filter so it would have a long shelf life and not have to be replaced frequently. A researcher applied an electrical discharge to the filter which produced a very hard, invisible coating. NASA realized that it's hard coating had another purpose. That was to coat the visors of the Space helmets and other equipment like safety glass. In 1983, Foster Grant, commercialized the usage of the technology and today most eyeglasses have this feature. It has saved countless amount of people from glass shards to the eye and eyeglasses today last 10 times as long.

Memory Foam

Can't even think about the old days of lumpy mattresses. Waking up stiff and sore. Well, thank NASA for that nightly 8 hours of restful, comfortable sleep. NASA invented memory foam to prevent injury to astronauts. It was developed to lessen the impact of crashes and absorb the kinetic energy of a crash. It was used for seating aboard space craft. This amazing invention has found an everyday usage in the manufacture of beds. It can be found in wheel chair padding and hospital beds designed to alleviate bed sores and to give more support and comfort to the sick and elderly. Shoe insoles have also used the technology for a better insole to protect the feet. We have not even scratched the surface on all the uses of this amazing invention.

Cordless tools

The Dustbuster and other cordless tools were invented because of the need for Astronauts to work with an independent, rechargeable power source. No "plugging in" in outer space. Black and Decker, contracted by Martin Marietta Corp for NASA, invented the battery operated tool. So the next time, you need to screw in a fixture, and you grab that cordless screwdriver, know that it is here because of NASA.

Mylar

An aluminum coated, plastic material that was designed to trap and reflect heat for space craft. Today, Mylar is used in all types of ways. From the Mylar balloon in the local party store all the way to the Mylar blankets used in marathon races and rescue missions. An amazing invention with many ordinary applications.

NASA spawns technology

We all benefit beyond the obvious because of NASA. Thousands of inventions spinning off to thousands more that benefit mankind. Some of these have been life changing and others make life easier. Either way, there is no price you can put on the work that NASA has performed since its formation by President Eisenhower in 1958.

Best Type of Digital Thermometer for Your Family?

People get sick all year. The flu knows no calendar or season. To combat the chances of getting sick, a basic tool to catch it quickly is the thermometer. There are many health thermometers to choose from in the local CVS or Walgreen's. Which type is right for you? Which are the most accurate? Which are the easiest to use? Which one is best for a newborn, child or an adult? Lots of questions but we have the answers.

Which thermometer for which person?

Birth to 2 years

  • First choice: Rectum

Age 2 to 5 years old

  • First choice: Rectum

  • Second choice: Ear

  • Third choice: Armpit

Age 5 years and older

  • First choice: Mouth

  • Second choice: Ear

  • Third choice: Armpit

Two types of thermometers

Mercury

the old fashioned, low tech mercury in a glass. Can be used to take temperature from the armpit, mouth or rectum. Extremely accurate but because of the chance that the glass breaks and mercury is toxic, most people have replaced them already. If you still have one, be sure to dispose of it safely in an environmentally friendly way by contacting your local trash collector and inquiring about proper disposal of hazardous materials. No throwing it into the trash can allowed.

Digital

Using heat sensors and infrared technology, digital models can be used to take temperature from the ear, armpit, mouth, rectum, and temporal region

Digital thermometer types

Ear thermometer

a non-invasive infrared device that takes temperature inside the ear canal. A fever is present if over 100.4oF. Price ranging from $18.00 to $50.00 for budget friendly households.

Armpit thermometers

Best used when a quick check of temperature is needed. Not the most accurate and the armpit needs to be dry as well so a hot humid day is not amenable for usage. If the armpit is above 99oF, a fever is present and a better test is necessary. Price Range is under $10 dollars to $50.00.

Oral thermometer

The old stand by method. Make sure the person has not had anything hot or cold to drink 30 minutes prior and it is very accurate. A reading above 99.5oF. indicates temperature. Price range is under $20.

Rectal thermometer

The most accurate place to get a precise reading. Recommended for newborns. Make sure to wait after a child has taken a bath cause that could give an inaccurate reading. A reading above 100.4oF indicates a fever and requires an immediate doctor's visit. Under $20.

Temporal thermometers

The least accurate thermometer that is simple to use but can't be trusted for accuracy. Uses infrared technology but too many outside factors that can give faulty readings. Fast and noninvasive but some things shouldn't be rushed. Not recommended. Price range: Save your money.

Temperature strips

Same classification as the temporal lobe thermometers. Liquid crystal strips that are a waste of money in most cases. Proven to be highly inaccurate. Not recommended. Price range: Save your money.

Leading Brands

Some excellent choices for digital thermometers that won't break the budget are Vicks, American Red Cross, Briggs Healthcare, Braun, and Exergen.

A temperature is the body's first sign that it is sick and medical attention needs to be found. Accurate results trump speed and ease of collection. Better taking a few extra minutes and getting the right reading, even if it causes minor discomfort and resistance from a child.

This information should not be used as a substitute for a visit to the physician's office.

  10. Detroit Lions--Anthony Barr, OLB UCLA

  11. Tennessee Titan-Blake Bortles, QB UCF

  12. New York Giants--Aaron Donald, DT Pitt

  13. St; Louis Ram--Calvin Pryor, FS Louisville

  14. Chicago Bears-HaSean Clinton-Dix, FS Alabama

  15. Pittsburgh Steelers-Darqueze Dennard, CB Michigan

  16. Dallas Cowboy--Timmy Jernigan, DT Florida State

  17. Baltimore Ravens--Zack Martin, OG Notre Dame

  18. New York Jet--Odell Beckham, WR LSU

  19. Miami Dolphin--C.J. Mosley, ILB Alabama

  20. Arizona Cardinals--Johnny Manziel, QB Texas A&M

  21. Green Bay Packer--Brandin Cooks, WR Oregon State

22. Philadelphia Eagle--Bradley Roby CB Ohio State
Prior to the release of DeSean Jackson, I think it was a no-brainer that the Eagles and Chip Kelly would pick a CB. They were extremely weak in coverage last year. Even though the Eagles were active in free agency acquiring CBs, they just don't have that premier player. The Eagles added Malcolm Jenkins at Safety so it's fair to assume that CB is still a target to upgrade. The Eagles are also needy at outside linebacker and a replacement for Djax at WR. That leaves a few choices on draft strategy but I still think at this stage of the draft, The Eagles can get an instant play maker at the CB position. There are other WRs and OLBers that could be drafted in later rounds. Bradley Roby has the world class speed and the skills to play tight man to man coverage. He has the mental focus that will enable him to battle for the ball. Chip Kelly always had strong CB play at Oregon so no doubt he will like to do the same for the Eagles defense.

23. Kansas City Chiefs- Marqise Lee, WR Southern California

K.C. got bit in free agency. They lost two offensive guards, Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz and Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert. The Chiefs have been quiet in free agency acquisitions cause of salary cap issues, only $4.5 million under the cap putting them in a position that they need to have a "perfect" draft. Turning around the franchise from the two wins in 2012 and keeping that momentum will be the challenge for Andy Reid and the Chiefs. The Chiefs have always been thin at the wide receiver position and that will have to be addressed. Could also make a case for them drafting a safety, like Jimmie Ward, but I see the need for a WR a bigger priority. The real question is do they draft offensive lineman and fill the holes lost in free agency or do they draft a WR which is really needed to spread defenders and give Jamaal Charles better chances running the ball. Of all the draft picks, this has been far the hardest to figure out. There are just so strategies for the Chiefs. The pick must be a WR. Marqise Lee can be a play maker for the Chiefs and a deep threat to replace Dexter McCluster.  Fell in the draft because of injury issues, he has the straight line speed, agility and soft hands. Will need coaching to run crisp routes and help understanding how to break free of defenders to give him separation. He will bring the spark that K.C. Needs on the offensive side of the ball.

24. Cincinnati Bengals-Teddy Bridgewater, QB Louisville

The Bengals need a DE to replace Michael Johnson and OT to replace Anthony Collins, both lost in free agency. They need a linebacker to replace James Harrison. They also need to upgrade their CB position with some younger players. With that all said, two players jump off the board as perfect fits, TCU CB Jason Verrett and Auburn DE Dee Ford. Both players could have an immediate impact for the Bengals and fill much needed positions. But I think the Bengals do something unorthodox here and stump everyone. I think they draft a QB. Andy Dalton is coming into a contract year and that has to be a major consideration for Marv Lewis. Dalton's QB performances have so many ups and downs, it's scary. Are the Bengals sold on Dalton? That's the question and I say that they are not. Having 10 draft picks will also play a part in the direction the Bengals head but I see them taking Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater. The Bengals have been very good at scouting talent in the draft as evidenced by their last 5 years where they drafted Giovanni Bernard, Marvin Jones, A.J. Green, Geno Atkins, and Michael Johnson. Some spoke about Bridgewater being the top pick last month but his stock has fallen severely since a very shaky Pro Day performance. Since then, he has been graded as good to bad at private workouts. I think the Bengals look past the workouts and judge him by his college game tape and there they see a QB who is very comfortable in the NFL system. He is a true pocket QB and in today's salary cap days, a team sees the devastation on future positional signings and handcuffing a top QB contract brings with it. Dalton and his agent are going to demand stupid money next year and Bridgewater is the perfect insurance policy that the Bengals need to insure they are in position to let Dalton walk if necessary.

25. San Diego Chargers-Louis Nix, NT Notre Dame

The Chargers have a few positions that need improving. They are CB, NT and WR. Last year's draft of Keenan Allen was a bright spot for San Diego. Taking a player that fell in the draft because of injury proved an effective strategy and helped in turning around Philip Rivers. Even though the secondary is arguably San Diego's biggest need, I think with the depth of CBs and the lack of premier NTs, they immediately address the NT position by taking Louis Nix. The Chargers can build upon defensive ends, Corey Liuget and Kendall Reyes by drafting this type of interior defensive lineman. Nix is the perfect compliment at 6'2" and 330 pounds. His strength is the ability to tie up players by using his natural leverage and strength. Adding him will improve the San Diego defense immediately and start the conversation that they might have the best line in the AFC West.

26. Cleveland Browns-Derek Carr, QB Fresno State

With the three top QB prospects off the board.  Cleveland can't afford to wait any longer. And why should they, Derek Carr is a top prospect. The younger brother of former pro QB David Carr. At 6'2" Derek possesses the skill as evidenced by his record setting college years. Derek has an NFL caliber arm and also the finesse needed to drop a ball into a player's hands in the corner of the end zone. Derek insures that Cleveland will not live and die based on Brian Hoyer's performance and healing ACL. Carr is the perfect QB for dual threat receivers Josh Gordon and Sammy Watkins. The knock has been that Carr played out of a shotgun formation primarily and will have to adapt to under center and to be able to recognize defensive sets but I believe that one year sitting behind Hoyer can give him that experience and give him that time to settle into the NFL and adapt to it's complicated defensive sets and give him that confidence that has also been a question mark.

27. New Orleans Saints-Kyle Fuller, CB Virginia Tech
The Saints need three positions, CB, OL and OLB. Looking at the board I see a few players that would fit in nicely. They could go with DeMarcus Lawrence or Dee Ford at DE. Or they could go CB with Kyle Fuller or Jason Verrett. I see them going after the best player of the four and that is Kyle Fuller. Rob Ryan since taking over the Saints defense has transitioned them into a "blitz on any down and often" defense. With the free agency signing of Jairus Byrd, They have a pro bowl safety tandem. With the pick of Kyle Fuller, it will change the Saints to a less frenzied defensive and make them less predictable. Saints can't pass on a player like Kyle Fuller here.

28. Carolina Panthers-Morgan Moses, OT Virginia
The Panthers gutted their wide receiver corps in the off season. Letting go Steve Smith, Brandon Lafell and Ted Ginn really make you think that the Panthers will draft a WR in the first round. But I think they have bigger hole at offensive tackle. The WRs can be had at a later round and GM Gettleman says he only needs to find a receiver or two to make up for the 10 catches a game that those three receivers combined . Don';t know if that is wishful thinking but I must look at the draft from the team's point of view and what their tendency might be rather than my own speculation. With that in mind, I think draft Morgan Moses. A natural left tackle after making the switch in senior year.  Has an excellent burst at the snap and a patience to let the block come to him when needed. Plays beyond his experience and would be the perfect fit to replace Jordan Gross and protect Cam Newton. With minor adjustments to technique and a strength conditioning program, Morgan may be a future perennial Pro Bowl Player and can't be overlooked by the Panthers.

29. New England Patriots-Jace Amaro, TE Texas Tech

The Patriots rarely draft players according to needs. Belichick normally drafts what fits into his system. With Hernandez in jail, Gronkowski becoming very comfortable being an injured player. Bill has to take Amaro. He is the seam threat that Brady loves to target in the red zone. A Big TE with great hands that will fight for the extra yards after the catch. If Gronkowski comes back healthy, the Patriots will enjoy the same dual TE set that brought them past success. Amaro has the tools to become one of the premiere Tight Ends and helps draw safeties in so Brady can exploit the man to man coverages.

30. San Francisco 49ers-Jason Verrett, CB TCU

The 49ers need a WR, Center. CB, and a defensive lineman. Losing Mario Manningham back to the Giants creates a void. Balancing the talent of Michael Crabtree that will allow Vernon Davis the ability to take advantage of the seam is the most important priority for the 49ers. With the top WRs already finding teams, the 49ers will ignore the WR position in round 1 and take a CB to replace Carlos Rodgers and/or Tarell Brown who left for the Raiders in free agency. Jason Verrett skills at press coverage, his nose for the ball and his athleticism makes him a no-brainer pick for the 49ers. Could be a valuable inside nickel corner after getting into a NFL strength conditioning program. Quick feet, swivel hips and not afraid to go for the interception could prove to be a very valuable defender for the 49ers.

31. Denver Broncos-Xavier Su'a-Filo OG UCLA
The Broncos were extremely active in free agency adding defensive end DeMarcus Ware, safety T.J. Ward, receiver Emmanuel Sanders and cornerback Aqib Talib. The Broncos could still address depth at CB, WR and LB. With that said and Kyle Van Noy on the board, Denver could easily jump and fill the linebacker spot but unexpected a diamond has been overlooked and the broncos will draft a player that has been on their radar but not expected to be available at 31.  Elway will draft him and not look back but count himself lucky that he was able to wrestle him from Seattle as this had to be Seattle's #1 board player considering their long standing inconsistency at the guard position. Xavier Su'a-Filo will join Louis Vasquez and be an immediate impact on the favorite to repeat a Super Bowl appearance. Impressive upper body strength, standing 6'4" and weighing 310 pounds, Xavier will anchor the interior of the line and offer Peyton Manning additional insurance from injury. His quickness prevents defenders from bull rushing and with some technique coaching should learn how to keep low and follow through on the block rather than being stood up.

32. Seattle Seahawks-Kelvin Benjamin, WR Florida State

The reigning Super Bowl Champion needs a few things in the draft. They need to replace Golden Tate. They need a replacement for Defensive tackle Red Bryant. I think Seattle makes a move on a WR here. They can address the defensive line later. Kelvin Benjamin, 6'5" 240 pound WR, are ya kidding. This is the perfect guy for Russell Wilson to throw to. It's like having another Tight end on the field and helps because of Wilson's size. Still developing running precise routes but is quick for his size and has sure hands. Needs some help with technique catching the ball with his hands rather than him allowing the ball to hit his chest. Lots of upside here for the Seahawks and can play inside or outside the hash marks. Reminds me of a Plaxico Burress, Kelvin becomes an immediate red zone threat.

Summary

There you have it. The final third of the draft and the conclusion to the first round. Lots of talent still left on the board and after doing this mock, I am walking away with the feeling that this might be the best draft in NFL history considering the talent and depth at many positions. The draft can fall many ways and nothing will shock me. So much talent and a good GM will be able to shift gears and adapt to what is on and off the board.

The 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT Picks 11-21

A quick review of picks 1-10. I argued in the first article, that the top ten teams would NOT pick a Quarterback. With this in mind we will see that impact in the draft picks of the teams picking 11-21. Summary of my first ten picks:

The 2014 NFL Mock Draft Top 10

  1. The Houston Texans--Jadeveon Clowney, DE University of South Carolina

  2. St. Louis Rams--Greg Robinson OT Auburn

  3. Jacksonville Jaguars--Khalil Mack OLB Buffalo

  4. Cleveland Browns--Sammy Watkins WR

  5. Oakland Raiders--Jake Matthews OT Texas A&M

  6. Atlanta Falcons--Eric Ebron TE North Carolina

  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers--Mike Evans WR Texas A&M

  8. Minnesota Vikings--Justin Gilbert CB Oklahoma State

  9. Buffalo Bills--Taylor Lewan OT Michigan

  10. Detroit Lions--Anthony Barr OLB UCLA

11. Tennessee Titans--Blake Bortles QB UCF

Tennessee needs three positions. They need a QB, CB, and a RB. Interesting draft position my previous top ten gives them. They now have the pick of the litter of QBs. They could choose a RB to replace CJ2K who announced with the NY Jets or they could draft a CB with Alterraun Verner departure because of free agency. But the way the draft has fallen, Tennessee GM will switch gears and be the first team to draft a QB and that is because of the inability of Jake Locker to stay healthy. By drafting Bortles, they tip their cap to all the scouts who say he needs some time getting up to NFL speed and they also put Locker on notice that his replacement is one injury away.

12. New York Giants--Aaron Donald DT Pitt

The Giants have three needs in the draft. A DT,WR and CB. It's a no brainer here that the Giants have to address losing Linval Joseph. Donald is that ideal fit for the Giants because of his ability to rush the QB from the inside. A lights out senior year highlighted by arguably the best performance of any player on the field at the Senior Bowl in Alabama. A 4.68 40 coupled with a strong 35 bench reps makes him impossible for the always defensive minded Giants. Looking forward to a great career from Aaron and a perfect fit for the Giants.

13. St. Louis Rams--Calvin Pryor FS Louisville

The Rams need a WR, OL and a Safety. The Rams are probably the biggest drafters of wide receivers in the last five years with varying success. I think GM Snead steers clear of that here and takes arguably the best Safety on the board Calvin Pryor. Some are saying HaSean Clinton-Dix is better but I like the numbers better on the field and the combine for Pryor. Both had identical 40 numbers but a huge difference in strength. Pryor posted 18 reps and Ha Ha only benched 11 reps. Also, the game stat line tells a story. Pryor in three years at Louisville, had 218 tackles, two sacks, seven interceptions, 18 passes defended, one fumble recovery and nine forced fumbles. Clinton-Dix in two years at Alabama had 88 tackles, seven interceptions and 13 passes defended. Pryor is much better coming to the help of the second level linebackers and making a tackle and probably will be a better cover on all tight ends and Clinton Dix is probably a bit better as a coverage Safety but for the Rams, I think Pryor is a better fit and they will get more out of him.

14. Chicago Bears--HaSean Clinton-Dix FS Alabama

The Bears need a Safety, CB, and DT. With Aaron Donald and Calvin Pryor off the board, they will choose Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and be done with that need. Clinton-Dix is very quick side to side and has excellent range and will allow Chicago to adopt an Over and Under type of defensive coverage if they are caught with a second tier talent at CB.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers--Darqueze Dennard CB Michigan

The Steelers are in need of a CB, DL, and a WR. The Steelers are amazing looking at history of finding the diamond receiver in later rounds. Hines Ward chosen in the third round, Michael Wallace drafted in the third round, Emmanuel Sanders in the third round, Antonio Brown in the sixth round. Get the picture. Steelers draft amazingly well in the latter rounds, especially WRs. So, with that in mind, they will choose a CB. Ike Taylor is old, 33 years old and it became apparent last year when his coverage was awful at times. Dennard makes life a whole lot easier for the Steelers and instantly fills a gaping hole. If Eric Ebron was on the board, they might have been tempted with Miller aging and more prone to injury, but that wasn't the case. Dennard is gonna be a great fit for the Black and Gold.

16. Dallas Cowboys--Timmy Jernigan DT Florida State

Dallas is in need of a DT, DE and a Safety. Losing Demarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher will definitely leave two huge holes in the Dallas defense. Luckily they can use this draft to perhaps fill one void with a stud. Dallas could have kept Hatcher and Ware and looked to draft a Safety and that would have been a great plan if they weren't so restricted by the salary cap. Jerry Jones and company had to face reality and move on. So, with that in mind, Dallas looked at the best player on the board at a position they need filling. Simple strategy. Dallas was probably torn here between Louis Nix and Jernigan but Nix's weight issue is sure to push the Cowboys to Jernigan. Jernigan is just faster and stronger and has more upside. Nix could easily be a draft bust and injury prone if he comes in out of shape like at Notre Dame.

17. Baltimore Ravens--Zack Martin OG Notre Dame

Ravens drafted a Safety in the first round last year and they may have done it again this year if Pryor or Clinton-Dix were on the board. But, It is what it is and Ozzie Newsome is from the draft school of "best player on the board". Ravens are extremely thin at the Offensive guard position, notably the right guard position. Currently have Kelechi Osemele, left guard and Marshal Yanda at right guard. Zack Martin never played the Guard position in college but would be an ideal fit and a definite upgrade at the RG position for the Ravens. Yanda is 29 years old and is a journeyman but will never be the star that Martin can be. Martin's unorthodox style of pass blocking will serve him better as an interior lineman rather than a tackle where he can be beaten by speed and good technique at the NFL level. With that said, Martin has amazing ability to keep his center of gravity low, has quickness off the snap and the ability to get to the second level and delivering some really nasty hits. Man plays intensely and is a perfect fit for the Ravens locker room culture. He could be what Logan Mankins has been to the Patriots. The anchor that makes the Patriots so stable on the offensive line. The toughness that Martin brings will be infectious to the rest of the players.

18. New York Jets--Odell Beckham WR LSU

The Jets need some help at CB, Safety, WR and TE. Jets issue for last few years is consistent receivers. Adding free agent Eric Decker has definitely helped but it isn't enough especially with the addition of QB Michael Vick who I forecast as the starting QB for the NY Jets. The Jets had a few choices here. With Kyle Fuller and Bradley Roby still on the board, they could easily be tempted to take a CB again like they did last year, especially after losing Cromartie to the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. But, I don't see Idzik going that route. Jets had multiple choices that are pretty equitable at WR like Brandin Cooks and Marqise Lee. But for The Jets, Beckham is a perfect fit. He is the elite speedster, deep threat that the Jets need. Especially now after solidifying their run game with the addition of Chris Johnson. Teams will be forced to play more Man to Man and that could be very advantageous to the Jets if they get the play expected from Stephen Hill and Jeff Cumberland.

19. Miami Dolphins--C.J. Mosley, ILB Alabama

The Dolphins need offensive linemen and a linebacker considering the sub par performance of newly signed Ellerbe. The signing of Brandon Albert will definitely help considering Tannehill was the most sacked QB in the league last year. The mess with the Incognito Martin drama puts the focus on the Dolphins OL. But there is a player on the board that is right up Dennis Hickey's alley. Alabama's C.J. Mosley. An immediate impact player with great speed, he has the ability to be an every down player and can become the defensive leader of the Dolphins. I think Hickey chooses the best player on the board here but if he doesn't I will guess it's the real need for a guard to play next to Albert and protect Tannehill and with that in mind, the alternate draft pick would be Xavier Su'a-Filo, Guard UCLA. An excellent pass protector and run blocker who can easily play on either side of the line. Smaller size than what most NFL teams look for but easily has the frame to add 10 to 20 lbs. Lots of upside here. But I would bet Mosley and hope to cash in on an interior lineman later in the draft.

20. Arizona Cardinals--Johnny Manziel, QB Texas A&M

The Cardinals need a Safety, Offensive tackle, Outside linebacker and a QB. I would say at this point that Kony Ealy would be the best player for the Cardinals that is on the board. But, because of the way the draft fell and the QBs being passed over. I think the Cardinals take a shot at Johnny Manziel. He fell into their laps unexpectedly and Bruce Arians knows that the days of Carson Palmer at age 34 are drawing to an end.

21. Green Bay Packers--Brandin Cooks, WR Oregon State

The Packers need a Safety and a Tight End because of the injury to Jermichael Finley and Andrew Quarless isn't the solution. A possible pick is Austin Seferian-Jenkins but I just don't think he is as polished that he needs to be to warrant such a high pick considering the other talent on the board and the absolute need for the Packers to address the wide receiver position. Losing Greg Jennings last year and James Jones this year to Oakland, coupled with the injury and loss of Finley, McCarthy has to be thinking Wide receiver and two top prospects are on the board. Marqise Lee and Brandin Cooks. But, Brandin Cooks fits the mold of what Green Bay likes in a wide receiver. Sure hands, explosive speed, has the ability to make yards after the catch. A perfect compliment to Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson. Highly productive last two years at Oregon State with 195 catches and 21 TDs. Can play inside and outside the hash marks and will run very precise routes, perfect for a QB like Aaron Rodgers.

Well, folks, that's picks 11-21. Lots of arguments to make at every draft position. Trust me, I know firsthand because it took me a lot of time to think through each pick and the needs of the teams respective to what the board looked like. Next article will cover picks 22-32 to finish the first round. Thanks for reading.

2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT Top 10

My Prediction

No Quarterbacks drafted in the top 10. That's my prediction. I see the draft falling away from the QBs that have been hyped. Each one of the top three who I classify as Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater have a unique issue. Problem with the three is they all have one thing or another that will keep a shrewd GM from popping on them too quick. Lots of fear in the draft for GMs and coaches. The amount of second guessing and Monday morning analysis is insane at best. I can see many GMs saying to themselves, "Hell, if I don't take so and so, I wouldn't get flamed in every article by every no-name ESPN reporter."

The "X-Factor"

Each one of these QB prospects have an asterisk next to their name. Manziel is undersized, unpredictable, erratic, and doesn't fit the mold for NFL pocket passers. Bortles needs a year as an understudy according to most NFL scouts and some time to mature to be an NFL QB. Nothing wrong with that considering we see the result, Aaron Rodgers, that sitting can make great stars one day. Teddy Bridgewater is probably the best suited for an NFL team coming out of Louisville and their NFL like system but the talk on him has been underwhelming and the Wonderlic score didn't help his ranking. Safer to choose one of the other positions so lets look at the way the draft falls if the top ten teams ignore the QB position.

The 2014 NFL Draft Top 10

1. The Houston Texans--Jadeveon Clowney, DE University of South Carolina A simple no brainer here. Who isn't gonna take this once in a decade prospect. The hell with the bench reps and the "work ethic" issue. These types of players change teams.

2. St. Louis Rams--Greg Robinson OT Auburn No team can ever have enough Offensive Tackles that are elite. No way for the Rams to pass on him but we could see them making a trade down to Atlanta. GM Snead loves to move the pieces around the board. I am kinda neutral to either decision.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars--Khalil Mack OLB Buffalo An excellent choice for the Jaguars to get a playmaker ready to make an impact from day one. Most likely candidate to get 130 to 150 tackles his first year.

4. Cleveland Browns--Sammy Watkins WR Clemson Cleveland found a diamond in Josh Gordon and Watkins is the perfect compliment for him. Will force defenses into more man to man and Over and Unders and the Browns can't afford NOT to draft this guy looking at their WR depth chart.

5. Oakland Raiders--Jake Matthews OT Texas A&M Yes, The Raiders signed 30 year old left tackle Donald Penn, but c'mon, with the trade for Matt Schaub and a possible QB pick in the later rounds, An elite Offensive tackle like Jake Matthews from a football family pedigree is as close to a no miss pick that Reggie Mckenzie will ever come near. Would solidify that position for many years to come.

6. Atlanta Falcons--Eric Ebron TE North Carolina With Tony Gonzalez retired, the need for a Tight End is glaring. Yes the Falcons have some defensive issues but this guy fits their team like a glove. With the accuracy of a Matty Ice and the return of a healthy Julio Jones, and Roddy White and the emergence of Harry Douglas, Atlanta will be stocked with a ton of aerial weapons. If you are gonna pay Matt Ryan this type of money, let him throw the ball in an air friendly dome. Eric Ebron gives them an instant red zone threat and that has always been the biggest challenge for the Falcons.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers--Mike Evans WR Texas A&M With Mike Williams being traded to the Bills, and the free agent signing of QB Josh McCown, the Bucs badly need a mirror for Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans is perfect for a Lovie Smith type of team. 6'5" 230 pound sure handed receiver that runs a 4.45. A GM would have to be crazy to pass on a player like him. This is almost a duplicate to the Brandon Marshall Alshon-Jeffery tandem in Chicago. With a healthy Doug Martin, the emergence of Mike James and Bobby Rainey, the Bucs are in position to be a very potent offense that can hurt a team with many weapons. If Lovie Smith is looking for balance on his offense, Evans is the perfect fit.

8. Minnesota Vikings--Justin Gilbert CB Oklahoma State Vikings were ranked 31st in pass defense in the league and 28th in QBR against. They drafted Xavier Rhodes in the first round last year. Perfect time to get the other CB. Faced with two choices here, Gilbert or Kyle Fuller. If I was Viking's GM, I choose Gilbert. He is quicker, posted a 4.37 40 against Fuller's 4.49. He is a lot stronger, 20 bench presses to 12 and he is 10 lbs heavier at the same height.

9. Buffalo Bills--Taylor Lewan OT Michigan He is a versatile lineman and Marrone gets the ability to start him on either side, which could mean a switch with Cordy Glenn getting Right Offensive tackle duties. Marrone himself is a former offensive line coach and he loves these no nonsense guys like Lewan and considering the injuries that Manuel sustained last year. An elite OT just can't be overlooked.

10. Detroit Lions--Anthony Barr OLB UCLA Many will question this pick and it is very open to argument as all are. My thought process was that the LIons need a few things. Of course they need a WR, but that can wait till later. Deep draft and lots of talent. I thought of a Safety here or a CB, the Lions were horrific in the secondary but I couldn't justify the picking of a safety knowing the history of drafting safeties in the top 15 since 1991. No team has reached the Super Bowl who did and only two safeties drafted in the top 15 since 1991 were studs, Sean Taylor RIP, Washington Redskins in 2004 and Eric Turner in 1991 by the Cleveland Browns. I also know that history shows that a top 15 safety draft pick doesn't help the win/loss record. Combined record, 242-284 (.460) doesn't move the needle so I can't pull the trigger on a Ha Ha Clinton-Dix or a Calvin Pryor. If Justin Gilbert was on the board, I would choose him but I don't rank Kyle Fuller or a Darqueze Dennard in the same class so I pass on them. That led me to the next thing the Lions need. They need a blitzing Linebacker and Anthony Barr is perfect for that. Some say he is only going be a third down situational pass rusher because that was his college function, but that is just limited thinking. He was originally recruited by the Bruins to be a Running Back and converted to defense. First year, he was second in the nation in sacks. Jim Mora the coach of UCLA and the former Saints head coach had amazing things to say about his work ethic, his leadership and that in his 28 years coaching he wouldn't select any player above him. Now, he is a bit prejudiced being his coach, but thats a bold statement.

Summary

That's my top 10. Many ways any draft can go, but this is my argument that teams will pass on the QBs. Look at the talent, look at the needs of teams and you can see from my pairings that this could very well be the results on Thursday May 8th 2014. Look for my picks 11 to 21 in the next week and I promise to finish round 1 before the end of April. Thanks for reading.

A Green Lawn in 5 Easy Steps

Spring is here and it's time to repair the damage the winter caused on that front lawn. I will show you 4 easy steps to bring back that lush green lawn and make your neighbors jealous. The 5 steps are Rake it, Seed it, Cover it, Mulch it and Water it.

RAKE IT

The worst and most labor intensive step is to do a thorough job of raking that dead grass. Put some elbow grease into it and make sure that you are diligent in this step.

SEED IT

Make sure you buy the proper seed depending on the amount of sunshine and rain your lawn receives. A great choice is Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed. It is a fast germinating and should produce that healthy green lawn in 4 to 6 weeks.

COVER IT

Cover the seed with a layer of top soil between 1/8' and ¼'' deep. That is enough to protect it from hungry birds, wind, and the heat from harsh direct sunlight, yet shallow enough to allow the seed to break the soil barrier and not be suffocated. Remember, a seed is tiny and fragile and can't penetrate a deep layer so be sparingly with the top soil. In particularly hard soil areas, I do like to put down a thin layer of soil before scattering my seed so the roots have an easier time taking hold especially if I didn't aerate the soil with a rototiller.

MULCH IT

A thin, sparse mulch layer will help maintain moisture and prevent erosion. To mulch the lawn properly, spread enough Mulch so when you look down it looks like its, 50% mulch and 50% top soil mix. Hay is an excellent substitute but you will need 50 to 80 pounds to cover a 1,000 square foot area. Easier to use commercial grade mulch found at the Home Depot or your local garden and nursery store.

WATER IT

Ten minutes a day, twice per day for the first two weeks is an ideal watering schedule. In two weeks, you should start to see some growth. A Kentucky blue grass could take twice as long so check the packaging on your seed mix. After the third week, you can reduce the schedule to once a day. Keep in mind, not enough or too much water are both damaging. Use your discretion but the goal is to keep the seeds moist but bear in mind, all seeds will be at varying depths, and different maturity levels because most seed sold is a blend. Adjust the watering obviously by where you live and the weather. Until the lawn is densely showing grass growth, make sure to keep the soil moist, the worse thing for any seed is for it to dry out. But Remember, NO DROWNING THE SEED.

There you are, 5 easy steps to that beautiful lawn that will increase your home's value and curb appeal. If you don't get around to taking care of your lawn before the summer, you always have a second chance every year in mid-October before the first frost. But, remember, that the new grass has to be strong enough to survive the brutal winter ahead so leave time. Good luck.

Death of the Public Library

Are the days of public libraries drawing to an end? The public library is soon to be a relic from the past. The clock is ticking. With the advent and popularity of the internet and the more environmentally conscience world, the days of the printed book and library are entering obsolescence

The internet is in high gear. The downfall of the daily newspaper and the increased web surfing from mobile devices has embarked us all on a new path. A path that is devoid of ink and wood pulp. Paper is a fossil relic of days past. The actual physical holding of media material and the obscene waste of space housing this media is an insanity that fortunately is drawing to a close. The local library will soon be exhaling for the last time... it's final breath.
At last count, there are 120,096 libraries in the United States. That's an awful lot of space wasted on the storage of a material that can be reduced to a kilobyte. Imagine what could replace a library. Maybe a low cost health clinic. perhaps a community day care. The days of the Dewey decimal system are behind us. The library of today is just a money saver for the cheapos of the world who don't want to pay for something. If anything is deemed valuable , it should be knowledge but unfortunately we have decided as a society that knowledge should be free, or well in this case accessed by anyone with a library card.

Books are nothing more than words formulated into ideas and printed with ink on wood pulp. Ink is by far one of the most precious commodities in the world. An ounce of ink can retail for as little as $13 to as much as $75. Which, per gallon, ranges from $1664.00 to an eye popping $9600.00. That's almost $10,000 for the Rolls Royce of Ink. Now, let's think about the cost of other liquids. So, for one gallon of the good ink, we could have bought 2,791 gallons of milk or 2,652 gallons of regular gasoline. Not fair to compare ink with the price of gold because one is a liquid and the other a solid, but you get my point. Ink is BLACK GOLD. And we waste it printing words on paper when we can all access any material on the world wide web and save all that ink. Converting to an electronic media standard would not only save ink, but we would save trees. Imagine that.
Imagine all the trees saved because we as a nation went paperless. 4 BILLION books were published last year in the US by approximately 75,000 book publishers. It took 30 million trees to make the paper found in those books. 30 million is about 1,150 times the amount of total trees found in Central Park in New York City. Many of these sourced trees are taken from endangered forests and cause devastating impact on the wildlife that relies on a healthy forest. The production impacts to the environment are frightening. The pulp and paper industry is the 4th largest emitter of greenhouse gases among U.S. manufacturing industries. The paper industry contributes 9% of total carbon dioxide emissions from manufacturing. Those are seriously unhealthy numbers. There are other dangers and that's in the disposal of paper. Paper makes up 26% of landfills. Degradation produces methane, a greenhouse gas with 23 times the heat trapping capacity of carbon dioxide. Landfills are the source of 34% of methane releases, the single largest source in the U.S. Imagine if we just got away from the written word, how much cleaner the world will be. This accounting doesn't even look into the practices of the lumber industry and the negative impact of deforestation on the environment. We need to stop the insanity.

Technology has enabled man to evolve. From writing on cave walls with charcoal, to using a feather pen and an ink well to a laserjet printer. The evolution is apparent. Now, the advent of the internet, the evolution is upon us to find a new way and to accept that way with open arms. The days of hopping in a car, driving to the library and perusing the stacks of books are over, at least they should be. The waste in time and trouble, not even counting the gasoline used to make a trip when an easier choice is available is a fool's errand. Why are we so reluctant to not embrace the age of electronic media? Why must we hold on so tightly to the bygone days of a bound book and a huge building to warehouse those books? Why do we feel the need for every community to have multiple libraries, some towns have one of each side of the town. 120k libraries in the U.S., divided by 50 states is 2400 libraries per state. C'mon now, that might have been ok in the 1980s but things have radically changed on how we collect and share information. In a small area of Central Long Island, New York, we can find many libraries. All redundantly offering the same products. We could stand in Massapequa, a small community on the south shore of Long Island and be amazed at the amount of libraries all in a 5 mile drive in any direction. We have the two libraries found in Massapequa, we have two libraries in Farmingdale, one library in Plainedge, one library in Seaford. thats less than 5 square miles and we have 6 libraries not counting the libraries found in the local schools. All of this info can be easily found on the internet. Instead we do as these hamlets in New York have done many times over. We warehouse books in ornate buildings and then loan them out for free, subsidized by the tax revenue of those areas. That's a plain and simple definition of a public library. What a waste of time and money, paper and ink, and real estate. Most of this info can be found on the internet.
The Google Library Project initiative was started in December 2004. It's goal for the first 10 years, Google would create a library by scanning and digitizing 15 million volumes. As of April 2013, they surpassed the 30 million volume mark. That's double the goal. That is now a huge amount of books that can be accessed just using a search word. No need for reference librarians, no need for people to reshelve books, no need to replace worn out copies, no need to spend millions on the actual places to store the books, no transportation costs getting the books to the library, etc, etc, etc, the list of benefits is almost endless. Wow, can you imagine, It's an evolution or a revolution, that choice is yours. Sooner than later, Google will catch up and have scanned every book in the world. That's a fact and it is just a matter of when it is finished. So, why isn't there conversation going on about alternative uses for libraries. Why hasn't the public demanded a more streamlined modern approach to electronic media. Because of money. The book publishers and the politicians of the world would keep us in the stone age if that meant the status quo wouldn't change.

The U.S. library system is Big business. Lets; just look at the Library system of the most celebrated city in the United States. The New York Library System. It is the second largest library system in the world behind only the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.. It was established at the turn of the 20th century and has currently 87 branches with 53 million items. Although New York has 5 boroughs, the NY Library system only serves the island of Manhattan, the island of Staten Island and the Bronx. Brooklyn and Queens have their own library systems. The annual budget is $245 Million dollars per year. Imagine that, one quarter of a billion dollars. Or $5 dollars spent annually on every item warehoused in the system. That isn't even counting the other two library systems, the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queens Borough Public Library. The Brooklyn Public Library system has 60 branches and 5 million items and a $140 million annual budget. The Queens Library system is similar. Comprised of 62 branches and 7.5million items, it operates on an annual budget of $125 million. Total of the 3 systems serving the City of New York and it's residents is $510 million dollars per year. That's a half Billion dollars for what easily could be accessed by all in the comforts of their own homes, or on their mobile devices anywhere.
Everyone starting to get the picture that the system is wasteful and archaic. It's time for people to wrap their minds and embrace change especially when the pros exceed the cons so dramatically. It defies logic that people would choose to keep the brick and mortar library system. Once the books are scanned onto the net. It's equal access for anyone. No waiting to take out a copy of a book, no fees for returning one late, no locked doors and restraint because of the hours of operation. Knowledge centers would now be open 24 hrs a day/365 days a year with no regard to weather or anything else. All one would need is an internet connection. All that cumulative time spent going to take out a book and then having to retrace the steps to return the item, saved. The three NY Public library systems combined maintain almost 200 brick and mortar buildings. Think about what these buildings could be used for in the public domain. Warehousing books is not the proper use for these buildings anymore. Not my call here, it's evolution.

Things change. and That's is a good thing. If not, we would all still be whipping that horse and bumping along in a buggy behind it, or we would still be starting the car by turning the crank in the front. It's ok to write a eulogy for the Library system. Say your piece, bow your head and say goodbye. Like Blockbuster video, it has reached the end of the road. Everyone remembers the days of going to the local video store and renting a movie. No one thinking that one day, renting of a movie would be done in the comfort of their own homes over the internet at the touch of a button. But, alas, that day has come. People now subscribe to a myriad of services satisfying their entertainment needs such as Amazon Prime,Netflix, and Hulu. But the days of schlepping to the video store are over. Thank God!! Soon the movie theatres will be a relic of the past as well. People don't want to sit in an auditorium of strangers watching a movie. If there were a viable alternative to watch new release movies from their homes. They would jump on it and leave behind the days of sticky floors, obnoxious people and overpriced concessions in a heartbeat. So, why does it antagonize people when others suggest evolving away from the brick and mortar library business. Why are people so reluctant to accept the future and the change that comes with it. Why is it so hard to change a certain generation? Why can't they see the overwhelming benefits of electronic media. Why must they try and restrict the evolution and the natural progression of the way things change. Why won't they just turn in their restrictive library card and subscribe to the future? Is it fear of change? I'm not sure, but I do know this. It is so much nicer and more convenient for me to google a topic and be offered many solutions that fit what I am searching for. It's a hassle to have to hop in a car or a subway, brave the weather and restricted hours of operation to seek out the knowledge I need at a library. Isn't life grand when you can in your pajamas google something that needs googling. Isn't it great that the days of the morning and afternoon newspaper are behind us and the instant gratification for info is at our fingertips.
So, Why the reluctance to demolish the antiquated public library system. A high speed bullet train is to the internet what a steam locomotive is to a library in a brave analogy of learning systems. Who would opt for the steam engine over the 300 mile an hour train? No one except the fearful. So, let's help the "fear change minded" people of the last generation, let's forget and ignore the politicians telling us what we need. They have an agenda and that agenda is the publishers wanting to sell the libraries and Universities the books. Scholastic Corporation doesn't donate millions in political campaigns because they are socially responsible. Nope, they are about increasing the black on their bottom line. Lots of people get fed cause of the book industry and it's time for that to end. Society has never benefited by hanging on to an industry that should have been replaced because of an evolution of technology. Think of Film processing and Kodak. Kodak was one of the largest companies in the world but the invention of digital cameras and SD cards killed the film processing business All those 60 minutes or less film processing stores were closed in record time. Anyone miss those days where they had to drop off a roll of film, then return and pick up their photos? Nope, no crying there. So, why all the heel dragging and crying over an antiquated way to get a book? Time to embrace the future and shutter institutions that were invented in 1895. Yes, Libraries once served the greater good and were responsible for much individual success, but let's face it, we have the internet now and wandering up and down stacks are a complete waste of time. More fun to hit a Starbucks, grab a latte and google the topic that interests you. If you aren't gonna think of yourself, think how lovely life would be for the average student having to tuck an Ipad under an arm rather than haul a 50 pound kapsack of books.

NFL Changes Super Bowl Format

NFL changes format for the playoffs and Super Bowl. That's a future newspaper headline. Lots of talk at the NFL Owners meeting and the buzz in Roger Goodell's office for the last few years has been about the extension of the playoff schedule to include more teams. There really is no need to add more teams. Unfortunately, the current NFL scheduling system is wrong. The season is too long. The preseason is a joke and meaningless to teams and fans. The Super Bowl format is flawed. The Big game should be a "best of three" game series. Win two, don't play the third, but this one and done does nothing to really determine who the season Champ was. All it does is tells us who the best team was on that day. That "Given Sunday".

Football needs change of format

Football needs to ditch the one game Super Bowl format and embrace a series tournament like other professional sports. Every year, we all wonder a bit if the best team of the NFL season actually was the Super Bowl Champion or was it just one of those "Any Given Sundays".

Any Given Sunday

This year Seattle won the Super Bowl doing what no other team in the league had been able to do, BLOW OUT the Denver Broncos 43-8. I believe this is a clear case of "Any Given Sunday". Denver got steamrolled, no doubt and no argument. But I have also witnessed 18-2 bashings in baseball or 125-62 bruisings in the NBA from bottom division teams on teams that eventually went to win that year's World Series. Anomalies happen in life. Every Dog has it's day. Now before, Seattle's 12th man flies to Las Vegas to torch my house and hang me in effigy, I am NOT saying Seattle is a bad team. I am NOT saying Seattle is the Dog who had it's day. I didn't say they don't deserve the Lombardi trophy They damn sure did. They earned it. They were the best team on February 2nd 2014. What I am saying is that Denver is and was the better team in 2013. No team in NFL history put up the box scores week in and week out that Denver did. They were a scoring machine. Peyton Manning was on fire. It's running game at times looked unstoppable. Every one of their receivers scored 10 TDs. Insane stats, every game all year long. And it doesn't deflect any from the amazing job that Pete Carroll and the Hawks did to neutralize that offense and then drive a stake right into John Fox's mending heart. but they did it ONE game. Not an entire season or even a series.

If I was Commissioner

My argument is this. The NFL wants more revenue. I get that and I am all for it. I love the NFL. I love what Pete Rozelle envisioned and I love the work Roger Goodell and the other commissioners have done to bring us this amazing product. The salary cap has made a more balanced league with the aim for league disparity and fairness across all markets. I love it and the salary cap adds another piece for the fans to snack on. The contract signings during the pre and post seasons. But this talk of bringing lower seeded teams into the playoff picture and giving them a chance to be crowned Super Bowl champs is a terrible idea. It's already bad enough that a 8-7-1 team like Green Bay could make the playoffs after winning their division. What's next, will we have 6-10 teams in the Super Bowl one day against 14-2 teams because they lucked out during a playoff game because of an "Immaculate reception" or a David Tyree "The Catch". Will a bad referee call or two cause a last ranked team a chance at a Superbowl? Cause all that will do is create a Super Bowl Sunday mismatch that will not draw more fans, it will draw less fans if the anomaly doesn't happen and the true result of a lopsided blowout occurs. A couple of years of "David vs Goliath" football in the Super Bowl with a transparent result where the favorite team destroys the underdog will only serve to distance fans from the big game. If not careful, The Super Bowl could follow Boxing when the result is obvious that fans tune out rather than tune in.

People hate change in general

I can hear the screams now. Oh no, someone wants to change an institution!! Get out the flamethrower and light it up, this guy is crazy. No, I'm not and neither is this conversation. It's an archaic system. The NFL has evolved to 32 teams. When the Super Bowl was introduced in 1966 there were 15 teams. We have twice as many teams today and with talk of expanding the league to possibly Los Angeles, internationally to Canada and London, England, it could be growing. The last few years the NFL has talked about dropping the Pro Bowl, eliminating or shortening the pre-season, extending the regular season and expanding the amount of teams that make the playoffs. Everyone seems to be just looking past an obvious alternative.

Series format is the better mousetrap

Let's join the other three major sports leagues in the format they have used for decades. The SERIES format. Let's get rid of the preseason, let's junk the last two games on the regular season calendar. That's six games gone. Now we can substitute a series type format. We could have a three game Super Bowl. Best two out of three. They could have a double elimination set up for the playoffs. Just spitballing here. But let's be honest. the Super Bowl doesn't give us a real indication on who was the best team for the season. Again, as I said, it's an indication on who was the best team on "Any Given Sunday".

Is "one and done" the right format?

Think about all the fluke plays and bad calls that turned previous Super Bowls. Think about the Immaculate Reception, The Catch, The blackout during the Ravens-49ers game. The List goes on. Lots of events change the outcome of a game. What happens in this past years Super Bowl if the Center doesn't launch the ball over Peyton Manning's head into the end-zone for an opening play safety. That two possession difference at the start of the game, great field position for Seattle and a two point head start got that snowball rolling and it kept gaining speed and Denver didn't have a chance to get out of it's way. I know the argument that these events are what make football great. Well, if that was the case, then the other sports could go to a one and done format. No need for the Best of Series like they play now.

Life is about change

The NFL wants to expand and increase revenue. The NFL Players Union wants to keep the status quo so the injury rate doesn't increase in proportion to the amount of games played. The fans hate the meaningless preseason, the games are terrible and more of a tool for teams to internally evaluate their talent. The fans hate the Pro Bowl, because players play at half speed because there is nothing but bragging rights for the winner. The NFL tried changing things up by using a fantasy system this year. Great idea I thought but the fun was in the picking of the teams in my opinion and the game again really didn't matter to many fans and was second rate to the process. So, it's time for a change in thinking.

Summary

Eliminate the pre-season, the teams can self-evaluate in training camp, no reason to broadcast meaningless games except for revenue. Eliminate games in weeks 15 and 16 since, most years, those games are the ones where most of the teams are not playing for anything and are already playing their second and third rate talent for next season evaluations and benching starters to prevent injury. Institute a 14 game regular season coupled with a double elimination series format for the playoffs. And finally a three game series for the Super Bowl. The nuts and bolts can be ironed out. But this conversation is long overdue.

More Hype and better contests

Imagine a team one game away from playoff elimination and the excitement and build up surrounding the next one. Imagine a Super Bowl, where both teams are tied up 1-1 going into the tie breaker game. Both teams now having two games under their belts against each other. Against studied opponents. Now that to me is exciting. Imagine the fun in one month of three big games played. Imagine the amount of betting. Imagine the advertisements. Imagine how happy the networks would be with the ratings of three Super Bowls. I can not think of one negative or reason why people would object except the same people who are afraid of anything in life changing. Wouldn't there be a clearer case for who is the real season champion based on a series format?

Originally the Super Bowl was called The SuperGame. Let's bring that definition to life by instituting the Series format for the most viewed sport in the world.
